Maulavi Mahboob Alam Sohawi, a distinguished scholar, accomplished jurist, and renowned poet of the 13th century Hijri, was born in 1261 AH in the region of Makkiwal, located in Mandi Bahauddin. He is considered one of the prominent intellectual and spiritual figures of the Indian subcontinent, having produced significant works in Persian, Punjabi, and Arabic, demonstrating mastery in all three languages. His poetry, especially in the mystical and romantic genres, is known for its emotional depth and spiritual intensity, placing him in the esteemed company of classical Persian poets such as Sanai GHaznavi, Attar Nishapuri, Jalaluddin Rumi, and Abdul Rahman Jami. Through his poetic expression, Sohawi eloquently conveyed profound mystical concepts such as wahdat al-wujud (unity of existence), divine love, and spiritual journey. He played a pivotal role in the dissemination of theoretical and practical Sufism in the Sohawa region, where his teachings found even greater resonance in the spiritual center of Birbal Sharif. His literary and spiritual legacy is deeply rooted in metaphysical insights, subtle mystical themes, and rich Sufi teachings. The body of his work reflects not only his command over religious sciences but also his deep immersion in inner knowledge (ma‘rifah). Today, Mahboob Alam Sohawi’s intellectual and poetic contributions continue to inspire admirers of Islamic mysticism and classical Persian literature.
