Licensing Policy

1. Introduction

The Journal of Applied Linguistics and TESOL (JALT) is committed to the open dissemination of scholarly research in the field of applied linguistics and TESOL. This licensing policy outlines the terms under which authors can retain rights to their work while JALT publishes it.

2. License Options

JALT offers authors two main licensing options for their published articles:

  • Open Access: Authors can choose to publish their work under a Creative Commons (CC) license. This allows for the widest possible dissemination of their research, as others can freely access, share, and adapt the work with attribution to the authors. JALT recommends the CC BY license (Attribution), which allows others to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, as long as they give appropriate credit to the original authors and source.
  • Subscription Access: Authors can choose to publish their work under a traditional subscription model. In this case, the article will be accessible only to JALT subscribers.

3. Author Rights

Regardless of the chosen licensing option, authors retain the following rights:

  • Copyright: Authors retain copyright to their work.
  • Self-Archiving: Authors can self-archive the published version of their article on their personal or institutional website after an embargo period (to be determined by JALT).
  • Teaching and Research Use: Authors can use their published work for teaching and research purposes.

4. JALT Rights

JALT retains the right to:

  • Publish and distribute the article in print and electronic formats.
  • Create derivative works, such as summaries or translations, for promotional purposes.
  • Include the article in databases and other indexing services.

5. Author Responsibilities

Authors are responsible for:

  • Obtaining any necessary permissions for the use of third-party materials in their article.
  • Ensuring their article complies with JALT’s formatting and submission guidelines.

6. Changes to the Licensing Policy

JALT reserves the right to change this licensing policy at any time. Authors will be notified of any changes that affect their published work.
