SOCIAL AND ETHICAL UPLIFT OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THE ROLE OF FAMILY, EDUCATIONAL, AND RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS

Abstract

Every individual in society is entitled to dignity, equality, and access to opportunities; however, when it comes to persons with disabilities, these rights are often practically limited. The challenges faced by persons with disabilities worldwide are not confined merely to physical or mental constraints but extend to the recognition of their social and ethical identity, status, and role. In developing countries like Pakistan, the issue becomes even more complex, where neglect of persons with disabilities has become a societal norm.The welfare and social uplift of persons with disabilities cannot be achieved solely through government policy-making; rather, it requires the active participation of core social institutions the family, educational institutions, and religious organizations. The family is the first unit where a person with disability develops identity, confidence, and values. Educational institutions serve not only as centers of knowledge but also as pivotal spaces for social inclusion. Similarly, religious institutions play a profound role in shaping societal attitudes, ethics, and acceptance.

The aim of this analytical study is to explore how these three institutions contribute to the social and ethical betterment of persons with disabilities, while also identifying areas where improvement is needed. Through this research, we seek to highlight the factors that support persons with disabilities in leading a dignified life and the barriers that hinder their social development.
