Abstract

The trend of England travelogues in Urdu literature emerged prominently in the mid-nineteenth century, as Urdu-speaking writers journeyed to England and closely observed its society. This research article analyzes the travelogues of three prominent writersDr. Ibadat Brelvi, Ali Sufyan Afaqi, and Qamar Ali Abbasi with aparticular focus on how they portrayed the social landscape of England. It examines their observations of social norms, interpersonal relationships, cultural practices, and community life, highlighting both the structural aspects of society and the underlying cultural values. The article further explores how these writers combined empirical observation with critical reflection to provide nuanced insights into English social life. By emphasizing social structures and cultural dynamics, this study demonstrates the capacity of Urdu travelogues to offer a detailed understanding of England’s societal fabric and its complexities from an Eastern literary perspective.
