Before commencing the full-scale compilation of the Urdu Dictionary (on Historical Principles), the Urdu Dictionary Board published in 1961 a 42-page sample titled“Namuna Lughat-e-Urdu”following its publication, a series of critical reviews and scholarly discussions began to appear. At the same time, the Board started publishing portions of the dictionary in its journal, Urdu Nama, in serial form. These contents were published in forty-five installments, and experts in lexicography and linguistics contributed their views and suggestions to guide and assist the Board. The purpose of these comments, criticisms, and recommendations was to bring about revision and improvement in the dictionary.Under the Lexicography Section of Urdu Nama, a special series titled“Ajza-e-Lughat par Tabsirah”(Comments on Dictionary Components) was initiated. In this series, the reviews, objections, and suggestions of Waris Sirhindi, Muhammad Ahsan Khan, and Sharif-ul-Hasan were published in various issues, while their responses and explanatory notes were provided by Shan-ul-Haq Haqqi, Khaliq Naqvi, and Qudrat Naqvi. The present paper offers a research-based analytical study of the criticisms and suggestions put forward by Waris Sirhindi and Muhammad Ahsan Khan.
