Abstract

In Iqbal's intellectual framework, 'Arzoo' (Desire) is not merely a psychological state but a driving force that keeps a human being actively engaged. The awakening of desire is inevitable before achieving any goals or destinations. An individual devoid of desire falls victim to stagnation and inertia. The 'burning of desire' (Sowz-e-Arzoo) is essential for Self-awareness, understanding the universe, and attaining closeness to God. Desire keeps a person restless, anxious, and dynamic. In Iqbal’s prayers, intellectual trends, and concepts, desire emerges as a fundamental source. Iqbal rejects 'stingless' and static desire; instead, he advocates for a 'living desire' that creates restlessness and passion in the heart, thereby inciting action. The construction and stability of the Self (Khudi), the attainment of the Falcon's (Shaheen) high flight and vision, the foundation of national awakening, the cultivation of divine attributes in a Believer, and the essence of Love (Ishq) all stem from this very desire. It is a great desire that elevates humans from lowliness to greatness. Desire negates passive contentment and silence, keeping humans in a state of continuous motion. Iqbal's message, his aspirations, and the demands arising from his poetry encompass his philosophy of desire. This paper attempts to understand Iqbal's philosophy of desire through his Urdu poetry and explores how it serves as the foundational source of his intellectual system.
