Causes, Impacts, and Preventive Measures of Natural Disasters in the Light of the Teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Abstract

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, storms, droughts, and epidemics pose serious challenges to human life and social stability. While modern science explains these phenomena through geological and environmental processes, Islam views them not only as physical events but also as moral reminders, divine tests, and opportunities for collective reform. This study examines the causes, impacts, and preventive measures of natural disasters in the light of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Drawing upon the Qur’an, Hadith, and the Prophetic biography, it highlights the spiritual, ethical, and social dimensions of calamities. The research emphasizes repentance, supplication, charity, social justice, environmental responsibility, and collective cooperation as key responses to disasters. The study concludes that the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ provide a comprehensive and balanced framework for understanding natural disasters and for building individual and societal resilience in times of crisis.
