Abstract

Hypocrisy (Nifaq) is one of the most critical moral and spiritual diseases identified by the Qur’an, posing serious threats to individual faith and the collective integrity of Muslim society. The Qur’an comprehensively highlights the characteristics, behaviors, and consequences of hypocrisy through various verses revealed in different contexts. This study aims to examine the Qur’anic verses related to hypocrisy and analyze their applications in light of selected classical and contemporary Urdu Tafsirs. The research primarily focuses on the interpretive contributions of تبیان القرآن, معارف القرآن, and تفسیر القرآن الکریم.This research adopts a qualitative and analytical methodology, exploring the linguistic, thematic, and contextual dimensions of relevant Qur’anic verses. It further identifies the practical manifestations (applications) of hypocrisy as explained by the selected exegetes and examines their relevance in contemporary contexts. The study highlights the defining traits of hypocrites, their psychological and behavioral patterns, and the Qur’anic approach toward exposing and addressing hypocrisy. The findings reveal that hypocrisy is not merely a theological concept but a multifaceted moral and social phenomenon with profound implications. The selected Tafsirs provide valuable insights into the identification of hypocrisy and offer guidance for safeguarding individual faith and maintaining social cohesion. This study contributes to the broader understanding of the Qur’anic discourse on hypocrisy and emphasizes the importance of sincere faith, moral integrity and self accountability in light of Qur’anic teachings.
