Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali was a great critic, poet, writer and reformer of Urdu literature. He memorized the Holy Quran in his childhood and later studied Arabic and Persian language. Due to his association with the famous poet Mustafa Khan Shifta, Hali developed a great taste for poetry and became a student of Mirza Ghalib in Delhi. His famous books include Mad-o-Jazaar Islam (Musadas e Hali), Muqadma Shar-o-Shaari, Diwan e Hali, Yadgar e Ghalib, Hayat e Saadi and Hayat e Javed.
This article examines the life of Maulana, his relationship with Iqbal, and the Qur’ānic teachings, commands and allusions in Hali's poetry. Hali took up the cause of reforming the Muslim Ummah, and Iqbal continued the work of his predecessor. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan got Hali to write “Masadas Hali”, which became the most widely read book in the subcontinent after the Holy Quran. Later, Iqbal's Shikwah and Jawab Shikwah also gained similar fame. We can say; the work that Sir Syed Ahmed Khan started for the reform of the Ummah was continued by Hali, Shibli, Iqbal and other personalities like them.
Allama Iqbal used to listen the Masad e Hali every second or third day. Listening to it, he used to cry. Iqbal also wrote a painful poem (Marsia) on Hali's death, in which he said that his own poetry is a continuation of Hali's voice. This poem (Marsia) of Iqbal is included in Bang Dara.
