Abstract

Dr. Abdul Rauf Rafiqui is a distinguished scholar and biographer in Urdu, Persian, and Pashto literature, renowned for his contributions to the preservation of Afghan poetic heritage. His seminal works, Shakaristan Roh” and “Sheer-o-Shakar, compile the lives, literary achievements, and poetic expressions of Afghan poets, thereby highlighting the cultural and linguistic interplay among Urdu, Persian, and Pashto. In Shakaristan Roh, Rafiqui documents nearly 400 Afghan poets in Urdu, offering a comprehensive account of their literary contributions and underscoring the historical significance of Afghanistan in Persian literary traditions. This work received wide recognition in academic circles and earned him an honorary award from Balochistan.

Similarly, Sheer-o-Shakar emphasizes the coexistence of Pashto and Persian poetry, reflecting on the broader theme of dialogue between civilizations. Rafiqui’s research demonstrates that Afghan poets not only enriched Persian and Pashto literature but also made notable contributions to Urdu, thereby establishing a tri-lingual literary legacy. His writings reveal the intellectual depth of Afghan scholars and poets, while also situating their work within the socio-political and cultural contexts of South and Central Asia.

By integrating biographical sketches, literary analysis, and historical perspectives, Rafiqui’s scholarship provides a vital resource for understanding the evolution of Afghan literary traditions. His works serve as a bridge between languages and cultures, reinforcing the importance of literature as a medium of unity, dialogue, and cultural continuity. Thus, Dr. Abdul Rauf Rafiqui’s contributions stand as a cornerstone in the study of Afghan poets and their enduring impact on Urdu, Persian, and Pashto literature.
