THE INFLUENCE OF IBN TAYMIYYAH’S THOUGHT IN THE INTRODUCTION TO TAFSĪR ON IBN KATHĪR’S INTRODUCTION TO HIS TAFSĪR:A COMPARATIVE ANALYTICAL STUDY

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah’s thought on al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir through a comparative analysis of Ibn Taymiyyah’s *Muqaddimah fi Usul al-Tafsir* and Ibn Kathir’s introduction to *Tafsir al-Qur’an al-‘Azim*. The research employs an inductive, analytical, and comparative methodology by tracing the common themes shared by the two introductions, analyzing their similarities and differences, and identifying the extent of Ibn Kathir’s intellectual and methodological reliance on his teacher.

The study concludes that Ibn Kathir was significantly influenced by Ibn Taymiyyah in the major principles of Qur’anic interpretation, particularly regarding the hierarchy of interpretive sources, the prohibition of interpretation based solely on personal opinion, the treatment of Isra’iliyyat reports, the etiquette of presenting scholarly disagreement, and the authority of the statements of the early generations. The research also demonstrates that this influence was not a mere imitation; rather, it reflected a conscious and selective engagement. Ibn Kathir omitted certain discussions that were not directly relevant to the purpose of his introduction and added subjects related to Qur’anic sciences that would benefit readers of his commentary. The study concludes that Ibn Kathir’s introduction represents a methodological continuation of Ibn Taymiyyah’s work while preserving Ibn Kathir’s own scholarly identity and independent approach
