Abstract

This study presents an analytical examination of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi’s approach to the scientific interpretation of the Qur’an, particularly in the context of the Āyāt al-Anfus (verses on the self/humanity) and Āyāt al-Āfāq (verses on the universe/horizons). It explores the purposes of Qur’anic reflection on human nature and the cosmos, the necessity of scientific engagement with the Qur’an in the modern era, and the Qur’anic invitation to contemplation. The research critically analyzes the two opposing schools of thought regarding the validity of scientific exegesis (al-tafsīr al-ʿilmī) and positions Nursi’s unique methodology as a distinct “middle way.” It highlights how Nursi employs scientific discoveriessuch as blood circulation, atomic energy, the lifelessness of the moon, and the medical benefits of fastingnot as ends in themselves but as “proofs of divine unity” (barāhīn al-tawḥīd) within his framework of “shuhudi exegesis” (witnessing interpretation). The study concludes that Nursi’s approach is distinguished by its spiritual and theological orientation, avoiding the pitfalls of both materialistic scientism and rigid literalism.
