Abstract

The twentieth century witnessed the emergence of the novel as a widely popular genre in Urdu literature. In the context of historical novel writing in Urdu literature, after Sharrar, the figure who garnered significant acclaim was Nasim Hijazi (1914–1996). Nasim Hijazi began his career as a novelist during the era of the Second World War, a time when the Indian independence movement was at its peak. Nasim Hijazi's novels are distinct from those of Sharrar and his imitators. The plots, characters, and dialogues in his novels are of a different style. A sense of balance is evident in his works, which is not found in the historical novels of his predecessors. He meticulously organized and structured his plots with great skill. Through his novels, Nasim Hijazi aimed to awaken the nation to the achievements of their ancestors and inspire them to reclaim their lost dignity. The characters in Nasim Hijazi's novels are also drawn from real figures in Islamic history. Muhammad bin Qasim, Hajjaj bin Yusuf, Raja Dahir, Hulegu Khan, and Genghis Khan are among the prominent characters in his works. Some of his notable novels, such as Dastan-e-Mujahid, Muhammad bin Qasim, Aakhri Chattan, and Shaheen, focus on Islamic history as their central theme.
