The "Islah-e-Zaban" (Reform of Language) movement marks a significant milestone in the history of the Urdu language, particularly gaining momentum in the 18th and 19th centuries within prominent literary centers like the Delhi School (Dabistan-e-Delhi) and the Lucknow School (Dabistan-e-Lucknow). The primary objective of this movement was to refine, embellish, and standardize Urdu, transforming it into a sophisticated, eloquent, and articulate language. It aimed to elevate Urdu from colloquial and vernacular usage to a high literary pedestal. This involved purifying its vocabulary, streamlining its grammar, and establishing norms for poetic and prose expression, thereby enhancing its prestige and aesthetic appeal. The movement played a crucial role in shaping modern Urdu, making it a powerful vehicle for literary, intellectual, and cultural expression.
