Abstract

The term "fitnah" appears in the Quran and Hadith with various meanings, and its application varies depending on the context. In Arabic, "fitnah" encompasses meanings such as trial, test, corruption, misguidance, and calamity. In the Quran and Hadith, "fitnah" often refers to a test or trial, where Allah tests humans to evaluate their faith. In some instances, "fitnah" signifies misguidance and the spread of evil, such as the attempts of disbelievers and hypocrites to lead Muslims astray. "Fitnah" can also denote efforts to divert individuals from their faith and to associate partners with Allah, which is considered more dangerous for human life than murder, as it can lead to eternal loss. The term is also used to indicate corruption and social discord. Individuals or events that disrupt societal peace are labeled as "fitnah" in the Quran and Hadith. Those who create discord or incite social upheaval are condemned, and their actions are referred to as "fitnah."In some verses, "fitnah" is used to denote punishment or retribution, highlighting the consequences of the wrongdoings of the oppressors. Sometimes, "fitnah" is employed to reflect the weakness of faith in an individual or community. Allah has tested people in various situations to see the extent of their faith.Overall, the term "fitnah" in the Quran and Hadith encompasses a wide range of meanings, relating to examination, social disruption, testing of faith, and punishment. Therefore, its interpretation changes with context, and restricting it to a specific meaning would deviate from the core teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.
