he 1930s brought a new turn in Urdu fiction in a sense. The publication of “Angaray” and “Aatsh Paray” brought the elements of rebellion into Urdu fiction with full force, the revolution and rebellion strengthened the trend of realism and tried to remove romanticism from the scene of short story.
Initially, a limited concept of reality was adopted. Then Muhammad Hassan Askari’s “Jazeera” and Ahmed Ali’s “Hamari Gali” were the first effective blows against the limited concept of “reality”. Both of them not only introduced fresh themes and styles in fiction but also broadened the horizon of Urdu short story with the diversity of language and expressions. This article is based on the concept of Symbolism and Empathy in the short stories Ahmed Ali, Manto and Akhtar Aurnivi.
