This research article introduces a critical examination of the objection made by Javed Amed Ghamidi against the historical accuracy of the Cave of the Hira event and the first revelation (Wahy). Javed Ahmed Ghamidi is doubtful of the chain of narration (isnad) from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr through al-Zuri and Sayyida Aishah (RA) and terms the whole narration as a subsequent fabrication by Muslim Saints. This article evaluates the strength of his claim by a detailed analysis of the hadith in Sahih Bukhari narrated by Aishah (RA), which has been held as the foundational report on the commencement of revelation.
This article employs both historical analysis and classical hadith methodology to investigate the chain of narrators, integrity of context, and congruence with early Islamic sources. It also investigates the Fatrah al-Waḥi (gap in revelation) and the psychological and spiritual effects experienced by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during this time as shown in authentic biographical and hadith literature.
By examining other early Sirah sources and commentaries on hadith, the paper tries to bring out the scholarly consensus over the reliability of the narration and its foundational role in understanding the commencement of Prophet hood. It also concerns whether Jawed Ahmed Ghamidi's claim is scholarly and weighty within the general context of hadith criticism.
This article will prove useful to researchers who are interested in early Islamic history, hadith sciences, and modern debate on prophetic revelation. It provides fresh points of reflection for both modern academics and traditional scholars aiming to cross classical Islamic knowledge with modern critical thinking.
