THEORIES OF THE NAQSHBANDI ORDER ON THE STRUGGLE AGAINST THE SELF (MUJAHADA AL-NAFS)
Abstract
Allah has created the human soul in such a way that it can distinguish between good and evil within itself. He has then decreed that the path to success and prosperity for mankind lies in siding with goodness in the struggle between good and evil and striving to overcome evil. The conscious effort a person makes to ensure that goodness prevails over evil is what the Qur’an calls tazkiyah (purification). The purification of the soul occurs when the wrong beliefs and ideologies that have taken root within a person are eradicated, the weaknesses and diseases instilled by negative habits and morals are corrected, and the insensitivity and stagnation brought on by blind following and the worship of traditions are removed. The cowardice and lack of resolve imposed by temporary and selfish desires must also be treated so that the person can understand their true purpose in life. Once this happens, they can rediscover their courage, refine their habits, and elevate themselves mentally, morally, and spiritually to the lofty rank for which Allah (SWT) has endowed them with the capability to reach.
