AN INVESTIGATION OF THE ROLE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY IN THE JOB SELECTION PROCESS OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN KARACHI

The current research focused on the influence of English language proficiency in job preference in schools of Karachi, Pakistan. Acknowledging the world-wide use of English as a lingua franca and its national significance in individual employability, this research aimed at investigating how important language skills – especially in English – are with regard to recruitment decisions. The research was based on quantitative study design through a questionnaire survey completed by 100 respondents from different educational institutes in Karachi. The data were studied with SPSS statistical (Version 23) using frequency analysis. The study indicated that being proficient in English is a prerequisite to be employed in educational institution. Most agreed that tests, interviews and selection of candidates are all significantly influenced by the knowledge of English. Furthermore, job promoting, communication effectiveness and job satisfaction were improved by English proficiency. They also showed that the employers consider those who are strong at English communication as more capable and confident workers.
