Abstract

The historiography of Urdu literature has evolved over centuries, reflecting the dynamic cultural, social, and intellectual developments of the subcontinent. From early tazkirahs (biographical sketches) to modern scholarly analyses, the documentation of Urdu literary history has been shaped by diverse methodologies, perspectives, and ideological influences. This paper explores the key phases in the writing of Urdu literary history, examining how early historians chronicled literary developments, the impact of colonial and post-colonial narratives, and the role of contemporary scholarship in reshaping our understanding of Urdu’s literary past. By analyzing major historical works, sources, and critical debates, this study highlights the challenges and trends in Urdu literary historiography while emphasizing the need for an inclusive, critical, and updated approach to documenting its evolution
