Abstract

This paper investigates the representations of noble love (al-ḥubb al-ʿudhri) in Andalusian literary and intellectual heritage, using Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi’s celebrated treatise Ṭawq al-Ḥamāmah fī al-Ulfa wa-l-Ālāf (The Ring of the Dove on Affection and Lovers) as a foundational model. Composed in response to a personal request from a close companion, the treatise transcends literary convention to offer a profound psychological, philosophical, and moral exploration of human love. Ibn Hazm approaches love not as a mere emotional or sensual experience, but as an ethical and spiritual journey shaped by sincerity, loyalty, and chastity.

The study highlights how Ibn Hazm’s deeply religious worldview, rigorous intellectual background, and personal emotional experiences converge to produce a uniquely Andalusian perspective distinct from Eastern Arabic traditions and free from classical Arab idealization. His systematic division of the treatise into thirty chapters reflects analytical depth, while his refusal to borrow from pre-Islamic narratives affirms the cultural authenticity of his work. This research demonstrates that Ṭawq al-Ḥamāmah stands as a pioneering document in Arabic psychological literature and a vital testament to the refined emotional sensibilities of Andalusian civilization.
