Abstract

This study explores how themes of environmental consciousness and animal welfare are represented in children’s literature translated from the Urdu tradition, with particular attention to their symbolic meaning, psychological depth, and educational value. It argues that shorter narrative forms—such as novellas and brief stories—especially in translation, provide an effective medium for presenting complex ethical concerns in ways that are accessible to young audiences. These concerns include social behavior, human accountability toward nature, and the importance of protecting wildlife. The translated works examined in this study offer subtle critiques of societal norms, hierarchical power dynamics, and ethical shortcomings, while also encouraging compassion toward non-human beings through the symbolic use of animals. Furthermore, the analysis situates these texts within a broader global dialogue on environmental preservation, highlighting how literary symbolism enables the expression of ideas that may otherwise face cultural or political limitations. In addition, the paper analyzes Qurratulain Hyder’s Urdu rendition of The Old Genie Hottabych (titled Jin Hasan Abdul Rahman) as a significant example of how translated children’s literature can merge imagination with rational thought. The discussion demonstrates how the narrative encourages scientific thinking, intellectual honesty, and ethical conduct, while challenging outdated supernatural beliefs. The study further maintains that Hyder’s translation attains the qualities of an original creative work due to its stylistic sophistication, cultural relevance, and narrative coherence. In conclusion, it emphasizes the important role of translated children’s literature in promoting environmental awareness, developing critical thinking skills, and nurturing moral understanding, thereby reinforcing its lasting significance in Urdu literary and educational contexts.
