Abstract

In Islam, the Nasara (Christians) are mentioned in multiple places in the Holy Qur’an. The Nasara refer to the group of Christians who believe that Jesus (ʿĪsā, peace be upon him) is the Son of God and who uphold the doctrine of the Trinity. However, the Qur’an guides them toward the correct understanding of Tawḥīd (monotheism) and Prophethood. The Qur’an discusses the teachings of the Nasara, their beliefs, the alteration (taḥrīf) of the divine scripture, and certain acts of disobedience in detail, so that people may distinguish between truth and falsehood and understand the clear guidance of Islam. The Qur’an also points to the distortion of the Gospel (Injīl) and advises the Nasara to adopt sincerity and devotion in the worship of Allah. Their attitudes toward the prophets, their claims regarding Jesus (ʿĪsā, peace be upon him), and the instructive aspects of their historical experiences are all mentioned in the Qur’an so that humanity may take lessons from them. Furthermore, the Qur’an clarifies the principles of social relations, justice, and fulfillment of covenants in dealings with the Nasara. All these points provide an overview of the beliefs and practices of the Nasara and teach Muslims to remain steadfast upon Tawḥīd, Sharīʿah, and moral principles. The Qur’an aims not only to guide and reform the Nasara but also to provide moral guidance and lessons for reflection for the Muslim community.
