Abstract
Punjabi drama, as a dynamic form of literary and artistic expression, has played a pivotal role in reflecting and shaping the socio-cultural landscape of Punjab. Emerging from traditional folk performances and oral storytelling traditions, Punjabi drama has evolved to address critical social issues such as caste discrimination, gender inequality, political upheavals, and the impact of partition and migration. This paper examines the development of Punjabi drama from its roots in folk theater, like nautanki and bhagat, to contemporary plays that engage with modern societal challenges. Through an analysis of significant works and playwrights, the study highlights how Punjabi drama serves as a mirror to societal dynamics, offering a platform for dialogue, resistance, and reform. It underscores the genre's contribution to raising awareness about pressing social issues while preserving the region's cultural heritage. By situating Punjabi drama within its social context, this work explores its enduring relevance in addressing the collective consciousness and fostering a deeper understanding of Punjab's evolving identity.
