RASHEED AMJAD’S SHORT STORIES: A STUDY IN THE CONTEXT OF MODERNISM

Abstract

Rasheed Amjad (1940-2021) was a highly influential Pakistani writer who transformed modern Urdu Fiction. He is best known for his mastery of symbolic and abstract short stories (Afsana). He wrote nearly 200 stories, collected in 13 books. Rasheed Amjad is also a Critic, Editor, and Compiler in Urdu Literature. But he is famous as short stories writer because of his modern way of thinking and his unique writing style. Instead of using straightforward storytelling, he used deep symbols, metaphors and poetic language to explore the inner world of human beings. The main themes of his writing are the search for human identity, both personal and collective suffering, and the inner loneliness of modern people. His style often feels poetic, with sentences that sound like verses. He also brings depth through references, allegories, and Sufi ideas, making his prose so rich and artistic that it sometimes feels close to poetry. He introduced new styles, subjects, and techniques into Urdu short stories. His work shows all the key features of modernism, such as the search for self, fear and oppression, loneliness and alienation, existentialism, and the ordinary man as a central symbol. Stylistically, his stories use symbolism, poetic language, connected ideas, allegory, references, and ambiguity. His Short Stories books are: “Bezar Adam ky Betay, Rait per Giraft, Sa peher ki Khizan, Pat Jhar men Khudkalami, Bhagay hy bayaban mujh sy, Kaghaz ki Faseel, Akas e By Khayal, Dashat e Khawab, Sat Rangay Parinday ky Taqub me, Gumshuda Awaz ki Dastak, Aik Aam Aadmi ky Khawab, Sehra Kahen Jisay, Dukh ek Chirya hy.”

Rasheed Amjad’s modernism was rooted in cultural traditions, free from unnecessary confusion, and kept evolving with time. This made him a unique and lasting representative of symbolic and abstract storytelling. This article aims to study his short stories in the context of the modernist movement in Urdu literature.
