This study examines the rhetorical phenomena of quotation (iqtibās) and inclusion (taḍmīn) in Andalusian ascetic poetry through analytical and rhetorical perspectives. The research reveals that Andalusian ascetic poets extensively employed these techniques by incorporating Qur'anic verses, Prophetic traditions, and verses from classical Arabic poetry into their works. The study categorizes quotation into four types: complete, partial, modified, and semantic quotation, demonstrating how poets integrated sacred texts without explicit attribution. Similarly, inclusion draws from pre-Islamic, Umayyad, Abbasid, and Eastern ascetic poetry. The analysis of works by Ibn Khafājah, Ibn 'Abd Rabbih, al-Ruṣāfī al-Balansī, and Abū al-Baqā' al-Rundī reveals that these techniques achieved multiple rhetorical dimensions: religious, persuasive, aesthetic, semantic, intertextual, and cultural. The findings indicate that quotation and inclusion enriched the linguistic composition, artistic structure, and spiritual depth of Andalusian ascetic poetry, while reflecting the cultural continuity between the Islamic East and West.
These phenomena demonstrate the poets' profound knowledge of religious and literary heritage and their ability to blend tradition with innovation, ultimately contributing to the distinctive character of Andalusian poetry.
